Competitions to Avoid

This list shows organisations which obtain the public’s intellectual property rights without paying for them, by launching competitions or appeals for creative works using a set of terms and conditions to grab their rights. The T&C’s form an unfair contract foisted on a public who, in large part, are unaware of the considerable value of their rights, or that they are being exploited for profit.

Don’t enter these competitions and let the organisers grab your hard worked for image for their exclusive and free use!

It is a list copied from the Artists Bill of Rights site – which should be on the must read list for every photographer.  I have re-arranged the list alphabetically to make it easier to check for a competition.  This list is added to regularly at the original site and I will update my list at the end of each month from May 2011.

Key to symbols (copied from the Artists Bill of Rights site and with links back to their site)

The following information appears on each entry on the competition notice lists

Organisation name,  Country,  Organisaton type,  Competition title,  Closing date, Number of photographs entered (if known),  Lost Rights Code,  Number of winning entries (if known)

Each character in the Lost Rights Code has the following meaning;

1. which entrants grant rights;
   a = all, w = winners only, o =entrant can opt to grant unlimited rights
2. copyright claimed;
   a = all, w = winners only, n = no
3. exclusive use claimed;
   a = all, w = winners only, 1 = exclusive 1st use from all, n = no
4. moral rights to be waived;
   a = all, w = winners only, n = no
5. rights are time limited;
   1-9 = no.years,   0 = 10,  n = no
6. purpose;
   c = promote contest only o = other purposes

Note that a lost rights code = xxxxxx means that no rules regarding rights have been published for the competition.

Type of organisation can be one of the following –

• #Gov if wholly or partly funded with public money collected by governments or local authorities.
• #NonP if a registered non-profit organisation,
• #Cha if a registered charity,
• #Pnnn for organisations in the private sector (see separate code list).

Competitions are listed in order of closing date and each competition links to a Rights Off report (if the organisation name is in bold font) or to the competition rules page if its still online.  We have saved the web page containing the rules for each competition not yet subject to a Rights Off report.

It is possible to copy/paste the comma delimited competition notice list on the previous tab into a spreadsheet. We at the Bill of Rights Campaign do this from time to time to create therights grabbing statistics.
